Known originally as the "Model of 1950 Target" before Smith & Wesson transitioned to numerical designations in 1957, it was designed primarily as a high-grade target and service sidearm featuring adjustable target sights, a pinned barrel, and a shrouded ejector rod. Prized by enthusiasts and handloaders for its exceptional accuracy, smooth action, and the mild yet effective ballistics of the .44 Special, production of the original Model 24 was discontinued in 1966 due to the overwhelming popularity of its more powerful sibling, the .44 Magnum Model 29.
