For sale is a Lee Enfield No5 MK1 ROF (Royal Ordnance Factory) Jungle Carbine bolt action rifle in .303 British. Serial number- 5842. Manufactured in 1945. This Enfield is in good condition and comes with 1 magazine. Features a 20" barrel with a good bore. Has a 12/45 date stamp on the receiver and serial stamps on the receiver and bolt. The Rifle No. 5 Mk I, was a derivative of the British Lee–Enfield No. 4 Mk I. Following experience of jungle fighting in the Pacific War the British came to the conclusion "that a rifle shorter and lighter than the standard issue, No. 4 rifle was required." The .303 British caliber rifle was a scaled-down version of the Enfield No. 4 Mk 1, losing nearly 4 inches of barrel and 2.5 pounds from the original rifle. The Jungle carbine was then fitted with a conical flash hider. Keeping the same sighting system as the No. 4 Mk 1, it had a fixed front sight and an adjustable peep rear sight, and a flip-up ladder sight for the longer-range shots. The Enfield No. 5 kept the same detachable 10 round magazine. The No. 5 never saw action before WWII ended. However, it was issued to British paratroopers probably for an invasion into northern Japan that never happened. The Jungle Carbine then saw action in the colonial conflicts of Southeast Asia following WWII; that is also where it earned its unofficial nickname.
