The original Model 1885 was designed by the legendary firearms inventor John Moses Browning and was initially manufactured by Winchester. The term "High Wall" refers to the receiver design, where the steel walls rise up to completely cover the sides of the breechblock when it is closed. This creates an incredibly strong, rigid action capable of handling powerful, long-range cartridges.

Browning specifically built this configuration for Black Powder Cartridge Rifle (BPCR) silhouette and long-range target shooting competitions. The .40-65 was originally a proprietary Winchester cartridge from the late 1880s. In modern BPCR, it is highly favored because it offers excellent accuracy and a flatter trajectory than the massive .45-70, but with noticeably lighter recoil—making it much easier on the shooter during a long day of competition.

It is a beautiful, highly specialized rifle built to honor 19th-century shooting traditions with modern manufacturing precision.
