Massachusetts Arms Co. Smith Carbine – .50 Cal – Civil War Rifle – LOOK
This is a no reserve penny auction for a Massachusetts Arms Co. Smith Carbine single-shot black powder rifle in .50 Cal. Serial number- 6837. This Smith Carbine and its bore are in overall good condition for its age, and was manufactured by the Massachusetts Arms Co. of Chicopee Falls, Massachusetts.
This Smith Carbine, serial number 6837, is a historically significant early Civil War–pattern example, issued to Union cavalry in the conflict’s opening years. It retains its original sling swivels—with the front swivel broken—and worn but visible inspector cartouches, attesting to government inspection and use in the field.
Chambered in .50 caliber and using a unique rubber-cased cartridge, the Smith’s distinctive break-action breechloading design offered a major leap in reloading speed and efficiency for mounted troops. Its low serial number places it among the earlier contracts fulfilled during the war, when more attention was given to detail and finish. With honest signs of service, this carbine offers collectors a compelling, nostalgic connection to the soldiers and stories of the Civil War.
Please note: There are cracks and chipping on the wrist of the stock, and one of the sling swivels is broken. please see pictures for details.
