Merwin & Hulbert 4th Model Double Action – .44-40 WCF – DA/SA Revolver
This is a no-reserve penny auction for a Merwin & Hulbert 4th Model Double Action revolver in .44-40 WCF. Serial number- 22938. This revolver is in average condition for its age with the expected nickel finish wear, some patina, and some scratches. The bore is in fair condition with visible lands and grooves but with some pitting and frosting present. The single action functions fine, but the double action only cycles the cylinder and we suspect that the original hammer may have been replaced at some point. When the hammer is cocked and the trigger is pulled, the timing and lock-up are good with some play. There are some chips to the butt of the original grips.
Merwin, Hulbert & Company revolvers were highly regarded in the late 19th century, and favored by prominent figures such as Texas Ranger Frank Hamer, who famously ambushed Bonnie and Clyde, and Pat Garrett, the lawman who killed Billy the Kid. Even Theodore Roosevelt, a renowned outdoorsman, gave these revolvers as gifts. The 4th Model, introduced in 1883, featured advancements such as a ribbed barrel and pinned front sight, resembling Smith & Wesson designs. These revolvers were known for their quality, durability, and innovative features. Despite production challenges, including a fire that destroyed company records, Merwin, Hulbert & Company revolvers remain a symbol of frontier craftsmanship and legacy.
