This Remington is in excellent condition for its age with inspector marks visibly present throughout! This is an original M1863 Remington produced .58 caliber Zouave rifle with seven groove rifling and all brass mounts. The barrel shows V/P proof markings and is dated 1863. The lock is also dated 1863 and marked REMINGTON'S ILION, N.Y. , showing the Federal Eagle coat of arms over U.S. The wood stock is exceptionally crisp and still clearly shows the government inspector stamps on the opposite side of the lock. The inspector's initials are repeated on the rear of the barrel next to the word STEEL. Also known as the "Zouave Rifle," the .58-caliber muzzle loading 1863 Remington was referred to as "Harpers Ferry Pattern" in official Army documents. Although over 12,000 were manufactured, exactly who used them and how they acquired the name Zouave are mysteries.
