RARE Russian Izhevsk Ex-Dragoon Mosin Nagant M91/38 Carbine – 7.62x54R

This is a no-reserve penny auction for an Izhevsk Ex-Dragoon Mosin Nagant M91/38 Carbine bolt-action rifle in 7.62x54R. Serial number- 96907. This rifle is in great condition for its age with a good bore (visible lands and grooves with carbon build-up) and comes with the original cleaning rod! Please note there are several cracks present throughout the stock and forend (see photos).

This exceptional piece is a rare example of an ex-Dragoon rifle converted into an M91/38 carbine, a practice far less common than the conversion of standard M1891 or M91/30 rifles. Originally produced as a Dragoon rifle—shorter than the M1891 and intended for mounted troops—this rifle was later updated during the Soviet Union's mid-20th-century modernization efforts to create the compact, maneuverable M91/38 carbine.

Key features include a pre-1930 hexagonal receiver, characteristic of its Dragoon origins, and shortened barrel and stock modifications matching M91/38 specifications. Arsenal markings from Izhevsk reflect its journey through Imperial Russian production and Soviet reconfiguration. These carbines, designed for second-line troops and specialized roles, exemplify Soviet ingenuity in extending the service life of older firearms.

While M91/38 carbines are not exceedingly rare, ex-Dragoon conversions stand out as highly collectible and historically significant, offering a unique glimpse into the transitional phase of Mosin-Nagant evolution. This rifle represents the blending of two eras—Imperial Russia and Soviet modernization—and is a must-have for discerning collectors.
