The Winchester Model 1895 SRC (Short Rifle Carbine) is a lever-action repeating rifle designed by John Browning and produced by Winchester from 1895 to the early 1940s, chambered primarily in powerful black-powder and smokeless cartridges such as .30-40 Krag, .303 British, .30-06 Springfield, and .405 Winchester. It features a distinctive box magazine (one of the first successful lever guns to use a non-tubular magazine), a straight-grip stock, and a shorter barrel in carbine configuration, making it more compact and handy than the full-length rifle version. The 1895 SRC was popular with law enforcement, big-game hunters, and military users (including Theodore Roosevelt during his African safari), prized for its strength, smooth action, and ability to handle high-pressure cartridges that tubular-magazine lever guns could not safely use. Today it is a sought-after collector’s piece representing the pinnacle of Winchester’s lever-action development before the company shifted focus to bolt-action and semi-automatic designs.
