Smith & Wesson's top-break. 38 Double Action was introduced in 1880 at almost the same time as its cousin, the smaller .32 Double Action. This revolver was chambered in .38 S&W caliber with a five-shot cylinder and featured the simultaneous, automatic cartridge extraction that the top-break S&W was becoming famous for. The. 38 Double Action was built on the same Model 2 frame as the .38 Single Action that Smith & Wesson introduced four years earlier. This reasonably powerful, medium-flame pocket-sized revolver quickly became very popular. These were the "Chief's Specials" of their day, and except for the barrel lengths, these .38s were actually smaller and lighter than the modern J-frame .38 Chief's Special revolver. Smith & Wesson manufactured the. 38 Double Action up until 1911, by which time a total of 554,077 revolvers had been produced.
