For sale is a C.G. Haenel Suhl Germany Gew 88 bolt action rifle in 8x57J. Serial number- 11423. Fine rifle built by Carl Gottlieb HAENEL [Gesellschaft Haenel Waffen-u. Fahrradfabrik] in Suhl on a Gewehr Model 1888 Commission action. The partial octagonal barrel is chambered for the 8x57J (.318"), ammunition still produced by the main European cartridges manufacturers. Definitely NOT a rifle for any Modern "S " ammo, such as Yugo etc. The "2,67 GBP StMG" proof mark indicates pre-WW I proofing ( " 2,67 grams Gewehr Blattchen Pulver Stahl-Mantel Geschoss") == 2,67grams (42.2 grains) Rifle Flake Powder with a Steel Jacketed Bullet. Given that the Rifle was made/assembled by CG Haenel, who are based in Suhl, and their greatest period of Building Commercial Sporters on the G88 action was the 1890s to 1914, We would say the rifle dates from that period. The German Proof House "Gauge" marking ( 172/28) is typical of the older ( pre-1914) diameter markings.

The elegant stock, in European walnut, displays a curved steel buttplate and a rounded grip.

This weapon is in beautiful condition especially considering it is more than hundred years old!
