Although the Springfield Model 1903 was the standard issue rifle of the US Army during WWI, the M1917 was the most common rifle carried by American soldiers during the war. The rifle was originally designed to replace the current British Enfield rifles of the time but when the First World War broke out the plans were provided to American companies. The idea was to contract American firearm manufacturers to build the rifle and supplement the small arms needed by the British Army during WWI. These American-produced rifles were called the Enfield M1914. However, when the US entered the war, the Army did not have enough Springfield M1903s to supply the massive influx of soldiers. Since tooling and production of the Model 1903 would take time to expand enough to meet the demand for a war in Europe, the US Government instead decided it was easier to continue producing the Model 1914s, which many companies already had the tooling for and rechambered them from the .303 British to the .30-06 Springfield round. These rifles were called the Model 1917, the vast majority of them we produced at the Eddystone Rifle Plant and issued and served along side the Springfield M1903.
